About
A Store With Standards, Based in Pune

House of Portland was built on the conviction that online shopping should require less guesswork — not more. We are a small team of buyers, writers, and logistics coordinators dedicated to getting curation right.
Why We Started House of Portland
In 2019, our founders were frustrated by the same recurring experience: browsing large Indian marketplaces, finding attractive product photographs, placing an order, and receiving something that bore only a passing resemblance to the listing. The problem was not dishonesty — it was scale. Marketplaces that carry millions of products cannot verify each one. House of Portland was founded as the deliberate opposite: a store small enough to check every item but professional enough to deliver reliably anywhere in India. We set up our buying operation in Pune and began with fewer than 40 SKUs. Today we carry several hundred, and the selection process has not changed. Every product still earns its place.

Our Sourcing Standards
Three criteria govern every product we consider adding to the catalog.
Material Integrity
We request material certificates and physical samples before negotiating any supply agreement. Products made with undisclosed synthetic blends, substandard metal alloys, or misleading finishes are declined at the sourcing stage — they never reach a listing draft.
Durability Under Use
Our team uses each candidate product at home or in the office for a minimum of two weeks before approving it. This is not a box-ticking exercise — it has resulted in rejecting several popular SKUs from well-known brands that looked excellent but degraded quickly with daily handling.
Fair Price Positioning
We benchmark every product against three comparable alternatives available in India. If a product is not meaningfully better than a cheaper option, or meaningfully more accessible than a pricier one, it does not make economic sense for our customers. We pass on price negotiations with suppliers and reflect them in our retail pricing.
Supplier Relationships
We maintain long-term agreements with fewer than 30 core suppliers, most of them Indian manufacturers and craft collectives. This gives us visibility into production batches, early access to new lines, and the ability to place quality requirements directly into supply contracts rather than accepting whatever arrives.

How the Ink-Blue Aesthetic Guides Our Brand
The ink-blue and warm-white palette you see throughout our store is not accidental. Ink blue is the colour of considered thought — of a ruled notebook, of a reference library, of quality that does not need to shout. Warm white is the colour of a clean surface and honest light. Together they express our operating philosophy: deliberate selection, transparent presentation, nothing exaggerated. We apply this standard to packaging as well. Orders from House of Portland arrive in matte ink-blue corrugated boxes with warm-white tissue paper inside — an unboxing experience that communicates care before the product is even visible. The aesthetic is functional as much as it is visual.
“As a product designer myself, I have high standards for how goods are presented. House of Portland's product pages are the most technically accurate I have encountered in the Indian e-commerce space — the photography is flat and honest, the measurements are correct, and the material notes match what arrived. The ink-blue packaging reinforced the impression that someone genuinely cared about the end-to-end experience.”
